Diagnostic Blood Tests: Caring for Your Pet from the Inside Out

Vet Clinic Diagnostic Blood Test Lab

Our Brompton Cross (Chelsea) In-house Lab

A hands-on clinical exam tells us a lot about your pet — how they move, how they feel, how they respond to us. But it can’t always show what’s happening on the inside. That’s where routine blood tests come in. They’re one of the simplest ways for us to look a little deeper and keep your pet healthy for longer.

Even pets who seem bright and happy can have tiny changes in their blood or organ function that aren’t visible yet. Conditions like kidney disease, liver issues or hormonal imbalances often start quietly. By catching them early, we can support your pet before they ever begin to feel unwell — and that makes all the difference.

Blood tests help us to spot early changes before symptoms appear, check how well organs are working, monitor long-term medications safely and build a personalised health baseline for your pet. With this information, we can tailor care, monitor ongoing conditions more closely, and give you confidence that your pet is truly doing well.

All our clinics are equipped with hospital-grade, in-house blood analysers, meaning we can run most tests immediately and share same-day results with you. Faster answers mean faster support for your pet, without the added cost of external labs.

Our Marylebone In-house Lab

A gentle, pet-centred experience

We approach every procedure in a way that protects your pet’s comfort and trust. A small patch of fur may be shaved, and the sample is taken quickly by a trained clinical team. One team member keeps your pet relaxed — usually with treats, cuddles or a bit of gentle chatting — while another draws the sample. Most pets barely notice it. If we need to use a soft muzzle for safety, we do so calmly and kindly.

What We Can Test For

• Haematology – Gives us a snapshot of red and white blood cells and platelets to check for anaemia, dehydration, infection or inflammation.

• Biochemistry – Shows us how the liver, kidneys and pancreas are functioning, and helps screen for diabetes and other internal conditions.

• Electrolytes – Measures essential salts like sodium, potassium and calcium. These help us understand hydration, metabolic stability and more complex illnesses.

• Blood gas analysis – Assesses oxygen levels and acid–base balance. Especially helpful for unwell or emergency patients.

• Coagulation testing – Helps diagnose clotting problems or suspected rodenticide (rat poison) exposure.

• Urine testing – From quick dipsticks to full diagnostic panels, used to detect urinary infections, kidney issues or urinary stones.
