Bringing home a kitten is exciting, and vaccines are one of the most important steps in protecting your newest family member’s long-term health. From first jabs to booster injections, understanding your kitten’s vaccination schedule helps ensure they grow into a confident and happy cat.

This guide covers vaccination timelines, costs, and what each injection protects against, so you know exactly what to expect.

Why Are Kitten Vaccinations Important?

Kittens are born with some immunity from their mother, but this protection fades quickly. Vaccinations help build strong, lasting protection against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, including:

  • Cat flu (feline herpesvirus or otherwise known as rhinotracheitis & calicivirus)

  • Feline panleukopenia (infectious enteritis)

  • Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)

Even indoor cats benefit from vaccinations, as viruses can be brought into the home on clothing, shoes or other pets.

Kitten Vaccination Schedule & Timeline

Most kittens begin their vaccination course at around 8–9 weeks of age. This usually involves two injections given a few weeks apart.

Your vet may tailor the schedule depending on your pet’s lifestyle, health and other risk factors.

What Is the Feline Leukaemia Vaccination?

The feline leukaemia (FeLV) vaccination protects against a serious viral infection spread through close contact with other cats. It is important for kittens who may go outdoors or live in multi-cat households.

Your vet will discuss whether this vaccine is recommended for your kitten and include it in their vaccination programme if appropriate.

Tips for Your Kitten’s First Vet Visit

  • Keep your kitten warm and comfortable after their injections

  • Mild sleepiness for 24 hours is normal

  • Avoid introducing new pets immediately after vaccination

  • Use treats and calm handling to build positive vet experiences

  • Avoid petting your kitten around the vaccinated area to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Starting gentle, stress-free vet visits early helps kittens grow into relaxed, confident adult cats.
