Pet Travel Services & Information

Important Travel Update

According to the newly issued APHA Briefing Note, an EU pet passport issued to or held by a GB resident will no longer be a valid document for travelling with pets from GB to the EU. This applies to EU pet passports issued in an EU Member State or Northern Ireland, including those issued before 22 April 2026. EU pet passports may only be issued to owners whose main residence is within the European Union.

Detailed guidance on the changes coming into effect from 22 April 2026 will be published on GOV.UK.

Why has this rule changed?

This change has been introduced by the EU and is part of post-Brexit travel regulations. It is not set by UK veterinary practices. The requirement for an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) ensures pets meet EU entry standards for each trip.

Who does this apply to?

According to the newly issued APHA Briefing Note, this applies to pet owners travelling from the UK to the EU whose main residence is outside the EU. EU pet passports may only be issued to owners whose main residence is within the European Union. There are no changes to GB entry requirements.

What does this mean for you?

GB residents travelling to the EU with a pet dog, cat or ferret will need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for travel from 22 April 2026.

What do you need to do?

Check if this applies to you. If it does, please book an appointment with an OV to ensure your pet’s documents are up to date.

We will receive updates on this topic from the government on 22 April.

Always check the rules or requirements for the country you’re travelling to.

Please note: the entire UK Veterinary community is seeking further clarification. Please bear with us as we find out more.
